Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel is a classic merry-go-round attraction with some extra Disney magic. The attraction is inspired by the classic animated film, Cinderella and the attraction features painted vignettes that retell the story of the enchanting tale.
Prince Charming’s Regal carousel was an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom on October 1st, 1971. It was originally called Cinderella’s Golden Carousel and was an ‘A-ticket’ attraction. A similar ride was an opening day attraction at Disneyland in 1955, however the California version is known as King Arthur’s Carousel. Both carousels feature the sword in the stone picture spot directly behind the castle and in front of the carousel. This attraction can be found in every Magic Kingdom-style park in the world. The only one not located in Fantasyland is at Shanghai Disneyland; their carousel is located in the Gardens of Imagination area of the park and is themed to the film Fantasia instead of a classic princess story.
The original carousel was manufactured in 1917 and was purchased by the Disney company in 1967 in preparation of the construction of Walt Disney World. The attraction features classic songs from Disney’s enormous catalogue of hit songs. The attraction was renamed to Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel once New Fantasyland was announced and began construction. Cinderella was originally going to have a similar meet and greet experience as Enchanted Tales with Belle. Guests would’ve met Cinderella in her country chateau. This choice led Disney Imagineers to re-theme the Carousel to Cinderella’s Prince Charming to expand the story’s presence in different way. The backstory to the name change was lengthy. According to Imagineers, Prince Charming had a carousel-like contraption deep in the forest to practice jousting. When villagers were intrigued and fascinated by the machine, the Prince commanded a new carousel be built in the square of the village for all to enjoy. Once the meet and greet concept was scratched and replaced with the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, the carousel had already been renamed, and would remain known as Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel.
