A slew of new Pixar and Disney animated movies are set to arrive in theaters in the coming years and today we’re getting new details about what’s in store! At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studio Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter showcased several of the studio’s upcoming movies starting with Pixar’s second 2015 release, The Good Dinosaur. Lasseter described the film as a boy and his dog story, but with the roles reversed with “Arlo”, a teenage dinosaur as the boy and a human cave-boy named “Spot” playing the role of the dog. The film takes a look at what the world would have been like had the dinosaurs not become extinct and focuses on Arlo trying to get home after he accidentally gets knocked unconscious into a river and finds himself far from home after the death of his father. Arlo will stand upright and speak while Spot will walk on his hands and feet and make grunting noises. Lasseter touted that The Good Dinosaur, which arrives in theaters on November 25th, will feature several supporting dinosaurs including T-Rexes, a Pterodactyl and a shaggy Velociraptor with haircuts reminiscent of famous soccer players. He promises the film will bring a level of believability in the visuals they’ve never done before. Next up on Pixar’s slate will be the June 17th, 2016 release of the long awaited Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory. The film will take place 6 months after the original and will focus on Dory on a quest to find her parents, voiced by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy. On her adventure, Dory will team up with an Octopus named “Hank” and a whale-shark named “Destiny” who thinks she’s actually a whale. The final Pixar release Lasseter spoke about was June 16th, 2017’s Toy Story 4, which he is set to direct. Though they are still in the early stages, he says the film is shaping up nicely and confirms that it will not be a direct continuation of the past films, but will instead be a new chapter in the Toy Story world. In addition to the Pixar films, Lasseter also gave some details on the slate of Disney animated movies starting with next year’s Zootopia which Lasseter describes as “classic Disney”. The film will take place in a world of talking animals where humans don’t exist. They live in a modern city called “Zootopia” where they are divided into classes and face biases based on preconceived notions about each animal and where natural enemies like rabbits and foxes don’t get along. Jason Bateman voices a fox named “Nick Wilde” who is forced to team with the first rabbit in the police force, “Judy Hopps” voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, in order to locate a missing mammal. A scene that was shown at Cannes featured the pair trying to track down a license plate and having to deal with a DMV run entirely by sloths. Zootopia is set to arrive in theaters on March 4th. And finally, Disney’s Moana set to arrive in theaters on November 23rd, 2016 is a musical about a Polynesian princess who disobeys her father and sails to a nearby island where she meets the mythical hero Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson. According to Lasseter, the Disney team did extensive research for the film, travelling to the South Pacific and speaking with local “fishmakers, anthropologists and elders”.
