‘it’s a small world’ at the Magic Kingdom is a classic Disney boat ride directly inspired by the original attraction that premiered at the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair. The happiest cruise that ever sailed si world renowned for it’s infectious song and beautiful artwork by Mary Blair.
‘it’s a small world’ was an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom on October 1st, 1971 and was classified as a ‘E-Ticket’ attraction and has remained relatively unchanged since opening 45 years ago. The only exception is that the loading area has been updated to reflect the outdoor facade that exist at it’s California counterpart. In fact, this version of the attraction is unfortunately the only one to not have an ornate exterior facade.
When the attraction first premiered at the New York World’s Fair it was an instant success. The attraction was part of the Pepsi Cola Pavilion and was also a charity raising funds for UNICEF. Before working on ‘it’s a small world’ the Imagineering department was already waist deep in three other attractions and had no intensions to build the classic boat ride. However when Walt’s friend Joan Crawford caught wind that the Pepsi Corporation was struggling to come up with an idea for an attraction appealing to children, she immediately called the film producer to help Pepsi out. The attraction was put together very quickly, but by no means suffered from good quality. The Sherman Brothers composed the famous song which featured a strong message of world peace. The brothers have said that the concept came out of the pessimistic world view many Americans had at the time due to the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Marc Davis’s wife, Alice Davis, was responsible for designing the hundreds of beautiful costumes for the ride. But the most notable contribution is the mid-century modern design and artwork by Disney artist Mary Blair.
The attraction may be over 50 years old, but the classic boat ride is beloved by Disney fans to this very day. However, due to it’s simple ride vehicle design and layout, the attraction can hold a very high number of guests every hour. Therefore, the wait doesn’t usually exceed the 20 to 30 minute mark. It is a great attraction to ride midday to escape the Florida sun or treacherous rain storms. Fastpass+ is available, but not necessarily recommend unless you are visiting the Magic Kingdom for two days and are focusing on attractions that little ones can enjoy. There are no height restrictions for this attraction, and disabled guests are requested to transfer to wheelchairs to experience the attraction. There are dedicated boats that can accommodate a wheel chair in the central section of the boat.
