Dumbo the Flying Elephant POV Magic Kingdom Walt Disney World

Dumbo the Flying Elephant is a classic spinning ride featuring characters from the 1941 film, Dumbo. It is a Disney Parks staple and considered to be a right of passage for every American child. Each Dumbo ride vehicle soars over the new Storybook Circus mini-land as part of New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant was an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom on October 1st, 1971. It was originally located just behind Cinderella Castle and Cinderella’s Golden Carousel. When the attraction opened in Florida in 1971, it was classified as a ‘C-Ticket’ attraction. Dumbo was also an opening day attraction at Disneyland in California…sort of. The attraction was meant to open on opening day in July, however technical difficulties delayed the official opening of the attraction until a month later in mid-August. The original designs for this ride featured 10 pink elephants, inspired by the controversial scene known as ‘Pink Elephants on Parade’ where Dumbo & Timothy Mouse suffer from hallucinations. Walt did not want the feeling of hallucinations to be associated with his family park. Therefore, the ride vehicles were changed to match the same color grey as Dumbo himself.

The Florida version of Dumbo has transformed into three different incarnations. It started as a simple attraction in Fantasyland with 10 ride vehicles and with the memorable disco ball at the center. In 1993, the ride was so popular with guests, it was updated to include 16 ride vehicles and consisted of a similar red and gold color schemed that we see today. By this time, Dumbo was such a popular attraction that it would reach at least a 50 minute wait on most days. Therefore, When the New Fantasyland expansion was announced, Imagineers updated and moved the Florida version to a new location to handle a larger guest capacity and include an entire mini-land themed to the circus. Dumbo the Flying Elephant at the Magic Kingdom is now a double spinning attraction which features a total number of 32 ride vehicles. The queue is an interactive playground themed to the scene where Dumbo is being rescued by firemen and nearby guests will find the Casey Jr. Splash ’n’ Soak Station. Dumbo fans should also visit the nearby Big Top Souvenirs for beautiful Dumbo themed merchandise and some delicious treats. The attraction has Fastpass+ avaiallbility and disabled guests must be able to transfer out of their wheelchair or ECV and onto one of the ride vehicles to experience this attraction.
